Gcina Mhlophe: Our story magic; Sun and the moon

Here is a illustration of the picture for the story of the Sun And the Moon

I honestly enjoyed the stories in Gcina Mhlophe books. They were very exciting to read, because these are the stories told by African cultures and others and it had been done only orally. Now that it has been published in this book it can be shared with everyone.

I'm going to discuss the first story in the book of the Sun and the Moon.
The story starts of in a time long ago and explains that in this time the days were short and the so were the nights because this was a time when the sun and the moon was married. Already in the first part of this story my imagination went wild, as you know i am scientific person and this at first was unimaginable it must have been impossible. However having said that i am also a person that loves fiction and i love magic so  i put the science one side and this story was truly magical in many ways.As you have read the story you world know the sun travels all over the world every day and comes home to tell the moon and the stars about his journey. However the sun was sad because he could not show the moon and the stars all these magical things in the world. But then one day the sun meats the Sea and invites the sea over, we all know how big the sea is, but we also know the sun in actual fact is so much bigger. But in a magical world long ago the sea was bigger than the sun and the moon. The sea agreed to come visit the sun and his family but warned that they will need a lot of space. Next the sun went home told his family what is happening and then they started preparing. The Sea finally came to visit and this part of the story made me laugh a bit, it meant that the sun even misjudged the size of the sea and their home was basically destroyed. It is sad when the story ends with the family not seeing each other any more. and also the great love between sun and moon to see each other just for a short while during an eclipse.

Don't you find this story magical? I believe this story would make children very inquisitive about our world, and the sun and the moon, they will even learn about an eclipse. I also think that he children would love this story so much that they would want to start reading it by themselves.
Until next time!!

Monique

  1. I feel the same way you feel Monique about the story of the moon and the sun. it makes you think of the sun and the moon in a different perspective, not scientifically but how actually did the stars come alive. You think of them as a one big family untill well! The sea came to visit and destroyed their whole house, not intentionally of course. And also agree with the fact that this story could be very interesting when teaching children geography, they can imagine how long it now takes for the son and the moon to meet with the son.
